Santorum: Obama Still Beatable

Politico

Rick Santorum says he’s “energized” that Osama bin Laden has been taken out, calling the Al Qaeda leader a “man whose mere existence was a sign of defiance to the United States” — but Santorum also says that bin Laden’s death won’t ensure a 2012 victory for President Barack Obama

“This is one moment, a very welcome moment. It’s an important moment in the fight, but there are a lot of issues that we have to deal with going forward in other places around the world as this fight continues,” Santorum told Radio Iowa Monday as he traveled through the state as the featured speaker of the Iowa Family Leader’s presidential lecture series.

Noting that the war on terrorism isn’t over, the former Pennsylvania senator ripped Obama’s handling in Egypt, Iran, Libya and Syria, saying he’d made Americans “less safe.”

It was a rare, fierce criticism of the president on a day when most Republicans were holding their fire, if not praising him.

“The president has handled all these situations poorly and, as a result, I believe we are less safe,” Santorum said. “Those are the issues that are going to be most important to the voters.”

While the news of bin Laden’s death will almost certainly boost Obama’s approval ratings, Santorum – referencing George H.W. Bush’s popularity in the wake of the Gulf War – hastened that Obama isn’t unbeatable.

“As we saw in 1992, ‘what have you done for me lately?’ is a very important and, I think, appropriate way the American public looks at these situations,” he said. “ It’s not what you’ve accomplished, that’s certainly a factor, but ‘What are you doing?’ and ‘What will you do?’ that’s much more important.”

Obama does deserve credit for this. After all had this mission been a disaster we would have shredded him to pieces. According to news reports the President made a risky call and he deserves our appreciation for it. President Obama will get a bounce out of this but it will be short lived.

But Santorum is right. Aside from the other foreign policy issues Obama has to deal with, gas prices are still high, the economy is still tanking and the deficit is still out of control. When the celebrations cease and life returns to normal, like it always does. By the time 2012 comes around Osama Bin Laden’s death won’t be a factor in how people cast their votes. It’s the economy stupid.
